Little Simz recently released her latest EP ‘Drop 6’ a continuation of her meteoric rise within the UK music scene. Her versatility, infectious flows and brilliant wordplay makes her a stand-out artist when discussing hip-hop for me and this latest EP only goes to prove that further. The 5 songs on ‘Drop 6’ all have their own style but it still feels as if Little Simz is at home on each of the songs. On ‘might bang might not’ she pulls you by the collar into the project, demonstrating how Little Simz never fails to grab your attention with a perfect balance of delivery, lyrics and flow accompanied by a bass heavy beat. On this track she also provides a reminder of just how rare her talent is

You aint seen no one like me since

Lauryn Hill back in the 90s

Comparing yourself to one of Hip-Hop’s goddesses is no small gesture but as the song continues Little Simz transforms from just a rapper to an all-encompassing, a will to be better than anyone thinks you can be.

They tryna not let me get in Fuck that, I crashed the party Fuck that, I am the party Don't get me started I am a one-woman army

‘One life, might live’ starts with a bass line that makes you pull a face like a confused Donald Duck. The simplicity of the beat allows Little Simz to poetically deliver bar after bar, delivering sage advice as if she was a century old guru. The song is so infectious to listen to and has been on repeat since the drop. Little Simz preaches being unapologetically yourself and enjoying your own vibe.

It’s a trap if they say they want you to be the same

The carefree vibes continue on ‘damn right’. Little Simz discusses her life since her success and the journey it took to get there.

Oh, how great it feels that we is winning

No escalators, we took the stairs.

It feels like Little Simz is looking from the outside in as she raps about the positives and negatives of being at the top. The stretched-out guitar backing provides an ethereal feel to the track which is quickly broken by the bouncy beat of ‘you should call mum’ which perfectly matches Little Simz’ groovy flow. Again, Little Simz is reflecting on her journey to success and her realisation that she has made it to where she wanted to be.

Somehow, I’m finally livin’ what I dreamed

Little Simz opens up about the struggles of focussing on what’s important in such a fast-paced world but reminds herself that the only thing she needs to focus on is music and there is nothing else that matters.

Cook my meals and make my tunes

Like there’s fuck else to do, ain’t that true?

We’re dragged back into the ethereal realm we just left with the airy vocal backing to ‘where’s my lighter’. Little Simz takes aim at her haters letting them know she’ll never let herself lose and displays her confidence in her own ability.

Still you wanna fuck with the kid, oh, what you got heart?

Well, I love a challenge and you ain’t a challenge

This EP is just further evidence of the brilliant talent that Little Simz harbours. The perfect mix of flow, word play, and punchlines gives her a style like none before. She’s displayed her versatility throughout her discography which is incredibly deep, and I don’t think I can even name a single objectively bad song that she’s made. It’s incredible to me how she has still not received the plaudits she deserves in my opinion.

Her last two projects before the ‘Drop 6’ EP were amazing in their own right; Grey Area had the absolute banger 101 FM on it which was so addictive that it should have been illegal. Its reminiscent sound makes it so fun to listen to, this was balanced out with the punchy pieces ‘Offence’, ‘Boss’ and ‘Venom’. ‘Stillness in Wonderland’ is such a unique project ‘LMPD’ featuring Chronixx is an out of this world experience, the song is mixed to perfection with each sound complimenting each other. Little Simz also holds her own on ‘King of Hearts’ featuring Chip and Ghetts, something that so many have failed to do before her.

If these last 3 projects are anything to go by then Little Simz is bound for greatness and there is nothing you can do to stop it.
